The Children’s Bilingual education in Cycle International School aims to enhance the to earning of English in school, and position it as Brazilian educational institution that’s attentive to the challenges of a complex and globalized world. By increasing the time former position of our students to the English language in kindergarten, we take another step in the consolidation of process of our mission, which is to encourage the formation of citizens of the world through quality education. Expanded communication capacity of our students from the coexistence of different cultures and people, allowing a greater understanding of others and the world around them.
In 2011, we began the implementation of our proposal. We present below it’s mais aspects.
Develop listening skills in english language.
Use the english language as verbal communication tool in the establishment of teaching and learning relationship.
Promote understanding of the way of living and seeing the world of native-speaking countries of the english language so that the student can draw parallels, detect similarities and diferences between different cultures.
The above objectives lead us to some considerations that will be set out bellow, the learning of L2 (second language), training o our team of teachers and organization/structure of early childhood education.
The acquisition of a second language
The acquisition of the seconf language will take place in a manner similar to the acquisition of the mother tongue process. The student will develop their skills through a natural assimilation process, intutive, unconscious, from the interactions with the group and with teachers. The interactions will be done while the child is experiencing the projects already developed in education child college. These, as well as situation of daily routine, offer authentic and challenging context of communication, so necessary for the acquisition of a language.
Guided by the evidence of the most recent research on language learning, choose the segment of early childhood education to implement bilingualism, without destroying our Brazilian school identify. According Ronald Kotulak, for example, author of “Inside the brain”, “kindergarten and especially in the first three years of life that the foundations of thought, language, vision, attitude and others features are lifted.” This stage in the brain acts as a supersponge of the environmental stimulus is there an extremaly favorable learning period. The acquisition becomes as easy as learning a first language.
We focus our efforts on developing the listening. Children will not be forced speak in english with the teacher or with colleagues until they are ready to do so. Speaking a second language occurs spontaneously and naturally, according to the time of each child. This is a principle established by a natural approach to language teaching, inspired by the theory of Stephen Krashen (“The natural approach”) and in line with the contributions of Piaget, Vygotsky and Chomsky.
The bilingual educators team
The educator bilingual lies a major challenge: it’s responsible for the development of different skills and abilities of their students, through a language unknown to most children. Therefore, we need skilledprofessionals of teaching and who are fluent in L2. The team of bilingual educators from our school consists of professional that meet these requirements. It is formed by teachers with different profiles, expressing the richness and diversity in a globalized world. All have experience with bilingual education and are experienced teachers in teaching young children.
Structure / Organization
Our bilingual education program is implemented throughout childhood education (classes K1, K2, K3, K4 and K5) through the following model: the children are accompanied by a tutor teacher and an assistant teacher throught the school year, both speak english only with students. The others teachers – experts, using the portuguese. It’s worth remembering that the K1 and K2 classes have at their disposal a professional responsible for hygiene (speaks portuguese), accompanying them throughout the class period.
Biligualism in early childhood education Cycle, and promote the development of the linguistic potential of our children, it’s projected toward a larger goal: to awaken respect for diversity and different world views, so that your actions are construction of a more just and harmonious society.
We would like to suggest some reading sources that allow deepening in bilingualism aspects mentioned herein.
